Speedometer Needle Irratic 200 1979

The speedometer needle flickers at certain speeds. My Haynes manual claims this is caused by vibration which is often created by to sharp of a bend in the cable - apparently all bends should be less then 4cm radius or something like that. There are no sharp bends in it. I did strighten some sections out and this stoped the ticking noise it was making but it still flickers. I un-fastened the coupling where it attaches at the speedometer and this area looks healthy and well lubed. Not sure what to do next. Is this a worn cable? There is only a 111,000 miles on the speedometer and cable. Anybody else experience this problem?

From personal experience, a loose centernut on the output flange of the tranny caused the problem on mine's. Tightening it up cured the problem.

Re: Speedometer Needle Irratic 200 1979

/// The damage may have been done. No way to tell on a bulletin board. The coiled wire center cable is rubbing the sheath. Lubrication may help and might be all you need. If the wear is severe where the rubbing occurs the cable may break or might already be broken. If it is the symptom would be wide fluctation of the speedometer as the ends catch and release. The cable is lubed from the bottom. There should be a seal at the top to prevent oil dripping from the underside of the dash.

There are lubricants made for this purpose but it has been so long I can't remember the names. I bought my last cable lubricant at a motorcycle shop. It was designed to lube push/pull not rotating cables. Worked great though.

While it may look well lubricated it may not be. If it were mine I would try some speedometer cable lubricant.
