antenna mast insertion problem 700 89

I received my antenna mast today yet while trying to insert it the motor seemed to stop with about 3-4 inches left over. Do I need to trim the white part or is there something obstructing it in the motor? Have others needed to trim the white part of the mast to make it fit?

Take it out and disassemble the motor housing. You have a chunk of the old tractor line in there.

MittenHed -

Thanx 4 the ans re: mainah, etc. Camden in March was to use up some expiring Continental Air coupons. Twas a good trip.

My 1986 244 GL is the first car ever for me with a working power antenna. Then I broke it, and now I'm wanting to disassemble the gear case. Can you provide any details about doing this? I am a little leary of just diving in, maybe springs or teeny parts will go twang and then I'd have junk instead of a reparable item.

Can another mast with full length but curly tractor plastic thing be installed with the case open?

TIA

Regards,

Bob

Re: antenna mast insertion problem 700 89

took the recommendation to disassemble the motor panel and sure enough the other half of the broke antenna came out. And on the second try the whole new antenna went in completely without a hitch. Now a fully functional power antenna and receptive AM stations.

Now does anyone recommend adding Volvo's amplifier to my stock Volvo radio? And if so where does the amplifier typically go in the car? Behind the fuse box area?

Re: antenna mast insertion problem 700 89

A broken piece of the old tail gear is likely still caught in the drive mechanism. If you compare the length of the tail gear on the old and new masts you should see the difference. You'll need to open the gear case at the motor to pick it out. It's also a good chance to clean it out properly and make sure the drain hole at the bottom is clear. If anything, use a minimal amount of lubrication like white lithium grease -something plastic friendly and not too gooey so as not to become a dirt magnet. Clean the exposed section of the mast regularly (like every oil change) using a rag moistened in WD-40 (this is the official Volvo care guideline).
