Poor mileage-or is it? 700 1992

I bought my first Volvo, a '92 740 Turbo wagon, in March. It has about 84,000 miles on it and apparently a relatively new turbo. My question is this: I've been getting what I consider to be pretty poor mileage, about 16-18 mpg--mostly around town. The one longer trip we took netted about 23 mpg in mostly highway driving. Is this the norm for this car? I somehow expected 20-22 around town and 25-28 or so on the highway. Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks in advance.

my 89 normally gets 27 mpg on the highway, though I did have a best of 30 mpg (and yes that is US, not imperial) and 19-20 around town (maybe a bit better in the summer hard to say really, my driving is fairly mixed and I typically get aprox 300 miles to aprox 13 gallons of fuels or aprox 23-24 MPG)

I would say that you aren't too far off. I have an 86 740GLE w/B230F non-turbo and I get 19 city and 25 highway (I'm told this is what they were rated when new). Since I have purchased it (3.5 years ago), I've had quite a bit done to it. Complete tune-up (plugs, wires, cap, rotor, BG44 induction cleaning service (cleans piston tops, valves, and injectors), harmonic balancer replaced (timing was not correct either), timing belt) and other non-engine performance related items.

How does it perform other than fuel mileage? I'm under the impression that the turbos (like the ones seen on the lots today) should get slightly better fuel mileage (maybe 2 mpg or so), but that's just my observation based on the sticker ratings.

I have a 1986 744Ti with about 280,000 miles on it. I drive about 35 miles one way to work, with stop and go only in the afternoon. I drive about 55 - 70 mph, trying to keep my speed down as much as possible with n o turbo engagement. I regularly get 27 mpg. I also do some around town driving.

Perhaps you need to check your temperature sensor and O2 sensor. Check the 700/900 FAQ via the features pull down memo.

Perhaps you should also check the auto trans, ie have you changed the fluid recently? How's the alignment?

Kev: I can only tell you what my '86 740 GLE TurboDiesel wagon, 'no toys', gets: consistent 25mpg city, 30-32mpg highway. I have a heavy foot, so a 'normal' driver might do better. One would expect the diesels to get the better mpg, and being my 3rd diesel car, I don't mind the smell. Maintaining well the car and its many systems is key to keeping it running. A good Volvo mechanic will be able to point out to you the weak points in your car, if any, and suggest fixes. If you DON'T have plumes of smoke, hesitation, stalling, poor acceleration, low power, but just have so-so mileage, you might 'in the norm'. Stay tuned here for others' tips. My old buggy has 215k miles, looks like hell, but runs like a top. Shweet.

That sounds within the normal range, especially if you have an automatic trans. Be glad you don't drive like me. I get 20mpg in my NON-turbo 240 with a manual trans. I just recently saw my best highway mileage of 25mpg, but before that I never got past 23mpg. How's your air filter, tire pressure, plugs, plug wires, etc? A tune-up may help a little. Also, switching to synthetic fluids (engine/trans/rear end) will probably give you an extra 1-2mpg if you aren't already using synthetic oil, which you definitely should since you've got a turbo.

Kevin, that's about it. I have a 940 SE and a 760 TI and that's all I get. Ihave put in K&N air filters and a lower restriction exhaust and I get about 19 city and 23 or 24 hwy. the milage sucks, but think about the safety.
