AW overdrive wiring question 200 1989

Recently purchased an 89 240 wagon. The overdrive light is on all the time. Pressing the overdrive switch causes the normal clicking in the relay. The solenoid responds to 12 volts supplied by jumper. Wiring under the car that supplies 12v to the solenoid is bare and will need to be replaced.

Spade #15 is 12v with ignition ON. #86 is 12v when the overdrive button is held in. #87 does not supply 12v at any time. Isn't 87 the spade that should supply 12v to the solenoid when the overdrive is switched ON? I've got a bag of misc. relays including four overdrive relays. None of these relays will cause 87 (white wire)to supply 12v to activate solenoid. What am I missing here- besides Don telling me to resolder all four relays :-)

Thanks for any insight.

Randy

Re: AW overdrive wiring question 200 1989

Having had time to think a little more about this brings this thought to mind. Is there anything similiar to the fourth gear sensor (M46 Overdrive) in the AW Transmission? Some device that won't allow the relay to power the solenoid unless the car has shifted into third gear. Still there is the fact that the overdrive arrow is not going off on this car and it should when the button is pressed to engage the overdrive.

Re: AW overdrive wiring question 200 1989

Randy -

I have the Volvo Wiring Diagram book for 1987-88, so accuracy depends on whether they changes this system in 1989.

The o/d light circuit grounds through spade #87a, as does the relay coil.

In looking at your post and at the diagrams I would conclude that the circuit from the relay contacts to spade #87 and then white lead and on to the solenoid is open somewhere. I can't see anything like the M46 "limiter" than prevents o/d in other than 4th gear, it must be internal to the AW. So - re-solder it is.

Good Luck,

Bob
