Rear Differential Fluid low or NO 200 1984

What would happen, hypothetically speaking, if I drove my car for awhile with no rear diff. fluid? Its making a staccato tap tap tap related to the speed and I think its the rear end. Couldn't get under tonight ot check the fluid so it will have to wait til tomorrow. I raised each rear wheel individually and spun it and was able to reproduce the noise both sides both forward and backward. Any thoughts?

DON'T DO THIS!!!!!!!!!!!Your diff. will FRY like a brain on drugs in a deep frying vat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That thing GETS HOTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The good news is the noise probably isn't the diff. Could be wheel bearings but brakes, u-joints come to mind.

Re: Rear Differential Fluid low or NO 200 1984

I sincerely doubt that it is out of fluid. Look on the diff itself. If it's out of fluid, you'll see a lot of buildup somewhere, where it has been leaking out. Usually from the input seal.

If you drive without it, you won't have a differential for very long. They usually get really noisy and whiny when they're bad.
