Sounds like brake pads but isn't 200 1984

Hope someone can help, sometimes when I stop the left front makes a classic metal on metal brake sound from the drivers side wheel. Pads are 300 miles old and upon inspection look 300 miles old, there were not any rocks or the like between the pads and disks, I can't find any parts that appear to be rubbing. Anyone have any ideas?

TIA

You did use Silglyde on the back of the pads, right?

Re: Sounds like brake pads but isn't 200 1984

Rob, I wish I could help, but I'm wrestling with the same problem. The problem started for me right after I changed out the calipers, pads and rotors. On mine, it seems to occur during light braking after the cars been driven for a few miles. I never hear it during heavy braking. And when the noise occurs it sounds just like what you describe. It's driving me nuts!

I've changed out the wheel bearings and seals, sanded the brake pads, put anti-squeak goop on the back of the pads, and re-bled the entire system. Nothing's worked.

If you do find a solution to this, please post it.

Thanks.

Re: Sounds like brake pads but isn't 200 1984

Someone else mentioned this a week or so ago. Yeah, it sounds like someone through a shovel of sand between the rotor and the Pads, right?

Mine does it every once in a while. It seems like if a take a short drive, let the car sit for a short time then hop in and drive again I get it. It's been doing it to me since 1988 (197000 miles), yet I have found nothing. The Discs are fine. My only guess is that sometimes the stopping chatter resonates into the body of the car somehow. I swear I feel it in the pedal though.

I don't have an answer. Just trying to give you peace of mind.

Uh, you didn't happen to repack the wheel bearings too, did you? A floppy wheel might make a little noise...

The other thing that new pads do is squeal. I wire brush the calipers, clean up the pins, and never-sieze the places where the pads ride in the caliper.

Just some guesses. The noise isn't quite loud enough to hear from here.

Re: Sounds like brake pads but isn't 200 1984

---Is it a high pitched sqeeeeeeeeeeek (whistle and embarassing) (not a worry)

---Or is it SCREEEEKKK (abrupt) gronchy high pitched? (metal to metal, bad)

If its just an annoying high pitched sqeek like a steam train, its ok, and the piston is rusty and/or the pads are too hard (I hear you can file down the edges to help too)
