Can't get rear brake rotor off. Need to check parking brake shoes. Need assistance. 200 87

Hi all:

I have a 1987, 240 wagon, 213,000 miles, BF230 eng. Auto Transm.

I'm trying to get the rear brake rotors off the car.

In all this mileage and years the rear rotors have never been of the car.

This is a Michigan car with lots of salt and rust in the winter.

I have loosened the parking brake cable at the parking brake lever (between the 2 front seats).

I have removed the rear brake caliper and the small pin/bolt that holds the rotor to the hub (this is the pin that goes thru hole in the steel wheel to make sure the tire goes back on in the same posistion).

I have applied lots of heat (2 propane torchs) to the center of the rotor and all the wheel studs.

I have applied PB Blaster and let it soak.

I have banged and banged with a steel hammer to loose thing up.

This rotor will not pull off.

It will not even move or loosen at all.

I need some addition thoughts and ideas.

All help will be appreciated.

Thanks...Mr. Tool

Success! Rear brake rotor is off! 200 87

    I got the rotor off!!

I use the technique as described by Leon Tonf using the c-clamp method.

See the other postings in this thread.

    I worked like a charm.

Thanks again to all ..... Mr. Tool

Sounds like you have a case of rusted emergency brake hardware. I'll bet a cold one the show holders are rusted out and will break off when you disassemble things.

Beck-Arnly makes a hardware kit for about $17 which includes the two holders and springs. You'll need to salvage your spacer bars, though.

One kit does both sides.Locate it now. I had one heck of a time finding one.

Let me know if you need the P/N

Mr Tool, Here's a technique that's worked for me:

    1. Attach a 6 in C-clamp to the edge of the rotor. Position it so that the frame of the clamp is about tangential to the edge of the rotor.

    2. Insert a breaker bar through the clamp, resting the end of it on the wheel hub. I used a 4 ft piece of 1-in steel pipe. Now you've got leverage.

    3. A couple of good yanks should free it. If not, relocate the clamp on another point on the rotor and try again.

    Good luck.

Leon: Please clarify the position of the c-clamp on the rear brake rotor. 200 86

Leon: Great idea! I would never of thought of it. I will give it a try.

QUESTION? Can you elaborate and clarify how the c-clamp attaches to the brake rotor?

Do you clamp the thickness of the rotor surface (about 1/2" thick) so the frame of the c-clamp will basically be parallel to the rear axle (or to say it another way, the frame of the c-clamp will be perpendicular ⏦ degrees] to the rotor surface?

      Thanks.....Mr. Tool.....

Yes - clamp the thickness of the rotor. Before you completely tighten it down, swivel the clamp a bit so that you have line-of-sight through the C-clamp to the hub.

        Leon
