Steering linkage 200 1991

I went to a shop today for an alignment. One of the tires is getting chewed up. They said I needed new tie rod ends (inner and outer) and they would be happy to replace for $500. Sooooo, I said thanks but no thanks and left. Got home, jacked up the car, and started wiggling things. The wheel with the bad tire had play in it, but it seemed to be the bearing, so I tightened it to the next notch the cotter pin could fit in. Wheel still turns freely, but no wiggle. I am assuming this means bearings are in need of replacement, yes? The clue was that most of the play was when shaking up and down. There is a tiny bit of play side to side, but none more than I have ever notices the 200k miles I have had the car.

Are there replaceable inner tie rod ends, I took the boot off and it was a ball and socket, with no appearant means of removal. But the guy did get a price for an inner tie rod end, what was this.

Thanks,

Ralph

Ralph, I just replaced both the tie rod and the tie rod end. It was easy. If your boot is torn the inner tie rod probably lost all it's grease and got rusted and worn. You can unscrew the tie rod after removing the tie rod end(mark where the stop screw is on the tie rod before unscrewing)Remove bolt above tie rod end ball joint and then seperate with a ball joint seperator. Put on a new boot then the tie rod end.You might need an alignment when finished if the toe in was moved too much during replacement.

Mine was so bad I could wiggle the tire side to side.

    Hope this helps, Phil Stone

P.S. When a bearing goes there is usually a clicking noise involved when cornering(at least with my SAAB)

You can get the inner (tie rod) and outer (tie rod end) seperately.

Check the play on the inner one. I've never had to replace one of them. They can get squeaky, but they usually stay pretty tight unless the rack boots are torn or fell off of the rack or something like that.

The outer ends are cheap and easy to replace. Like $12 apiece, I think is the price I paid last time.
