White smoke, need head-gasket: best brand? best sealant? 200 82

Howdy all - Need to make this head-gasket job on this '82 245 B21F the very best possible. Am also doing flame trap and PVC. What's the very best heavy-duty brand of head-gasket? sealant? What's the very best technique for applying the sealant? Any other tips to get the best possible seal? Thanks in advance for your advice!

Rhaire is correct. Elring is the way to go. Have a machine shop check out the head. A valve job would be good right about now. Also, get a good straight edge and check the block deck surface for warp.

Also chase all the threads on the bolts and holes for accurate torque readings

I went with the Volvo OEM (Elring) gasket and installed it by the book. No sealant is used. Three times, three different 240's, three different reasons. What leads you to believe you can improve on what the engineers who designed and manufactured possibly the most durable car in the world, specify?

      Dude!

The bits and flakes of EFI harness that just crumbled out of my 95 960 would be enough to make an engineer cry.

9 hours later, custom made, double polyolefin jacketing, Kevlar loom, wrapped in 6 mil aluminum..... Now *THAT* is a harness that will not fail.

I agree, Elring is the way to go, in this case. But that mans proposal is not unreasonable.

General I have read your tales of woes with genuine interest and sympathy because I have a 1995 960 and have recently changed the engine wiring harness and gone over all the rest of the wiring with soldering gun, insulation and electrical tape on a 1986 760 turbo. Needless to say I am filled with admiration for the wiiring harness you have made. In fact, I read a posting that directed you to the Radio Shack comercial catalogue for wire to make the harness. At your convenience, will you please send me all the details regarding materials and how to put them together to make proper wiring harness. I have already checked and unless I take preventive measures it is only a matter of time before I have the same problem with the 960 that you recently had with a hidden ground on the engine witring harness. I will apreciate getting that information and I salute oon your strategic wiring prowess.
