replacing transmission- need to switch clutch release bearing 700 86

I'm replacing my original M46 transmission with one out of an 80 240. There are slight differences in design, and I've taken care of all of them except the clutch release bearing. I'm replacing the clutch because it needs replacing, and the kit came with a new clutch release bearing. The bearing on the 80 transmission is a different shape, so is the release fork. I am unable to remove the fork and bearing from this older transmission. The newer fork was easy because it was held in by a wire fastener- it just popped out. This fork seems to be held differently. The bearing is also held differently in the 80 transmission. Again, in the newer transmission the bearing just popped off. SO, how do I remove the fork and bearing from the 80 transmission? Or, can I just exchange the bell housings... I've already explored this, but the fork gets in the way of one of the bolts- very fustrating. I'm also worried all the oil will come out if I remove the bell housing... will it?

Thanks,

Nathan

Re: replacing transmission- need to switch clutch release bearing 700 86

The fork on the 80 pivots at the end opposite the cable attachment. To remove the fork and bearing, remove the bolt from the back side of the bell housing. The bolt holds the pivot ball to the bell housing. Once the bolt is out, the fork and bearing will come out easily. I'm not sure if the fork set-up from the 80 will work on the 700, so you may have to swap bell housing. All you will need is the front gasket. Note, there are shims between the housing and front trans bearings. Make sure to reinstall the shims.

Re: replacing transmission- need to switch clutch release bearing 700 86

Thanks for the help. I swapped the bell housings, but when I went to Advance Auto, the guy didn't know the name of the seal (and I had forgetten it was a front seal), so he suggested some stuff in a silicone-type bottle that is a replacement for the seal. I think that will work fine. I just have to wait 24 hours for it to dry.

Nathan
