AC drain lines 200 84

Good afternoon, was trying to solve this problem for some time, and have now finally realized that if I dont' get it fixed soon, then I will have to worry about rust.

Car is an 84 242 GLT. Floorboards are wet. I know this is not antifreeze as there isno coolant loss, and/or it is clear. So it rules out the Heater Core leaking.

I can only think that the Drain lines are plugged and it is causing the water to fill up (When using ac) and back out onto the floor. I have noticed this in many 200 and 700 series car's.

Can someone direct me to find these? (Gen Location etc). After I locate them I will run a burst of air, via the friendly air compressor machine, and see if that solves the problem.

Thank you all soo much.

David

To find the a/c drain line remove the kick panel on the RH side of the center unit. If you haven't done this one B4 here's a tip: Remove the under-dash black cover first, and look at how the end of the panel close to the firewall is clipped in. The other attachments are straightforward.

Look into the area behind the radio box to see the bottom of the a/c air box. There is a rubber tube there, about one half inch in diameter. The top end is slipped over a nipple out of the a/c box, the bottom end has an integral grommet and exits the car through the floorboard a little to the right of the top end.

DO NOT remove the tube without squeezing it some to try a loosen up the crud and let some water out. Then still expect some water to drain out of the a/c box when you pull the top end of the rubber tube loose.

Clean the tube outside, you don't want what's in there in your house.

If the bottom of the tube is in a duckbill shape, cut some off to help it stay free in the future.

Replacement is easier if you smear a little ATF on the inside of the rubber tube B4 working it onto the a/c box nipple. Put the bottom end in last.

Good Luck,

Bob

Re: AC drain lines 200 84

David:

Pull the passenger side kick panel off of the center console. Peel back the carpeting a bit and reach up into the center console area along the transmission tunnel. You should find a 6-7" long "S" shaped hose going from the bottom of the evaporator housing to the top of the transmission tunnel. It's probably clogged. Pull this out (be prepared for a flood) and clean it.

If you really want to do this job right, take the seats out (two 13mm nuts and two 13mm bolts each), pull up all the carpet and the padding and dry it out. Take this time to inspect for rust which may already be present in the floors and further along than you might guess. Also, you can remove and empty the heater ducts that go to the back seat footwells; I guarantee they're full of water, too (I found a bunch of loose change in mine when I cleaned them!)

Finally, press the "recirc" button on the console, reach back up between the firewall and the evaporator housing and feel how much crud is in the bottom of the front of the evaporator tray. Some contortionism, a shop vac and a popsicle stick (to scrape with) will allow you to clean at least some of it, and minimize the possibility of the drain hose clogging again soon.
