Overdrive rpms 200 80

I have a m46 i belive and everthing is rebuilt but i was curious what other people are turning in OD. it seems at freeway speed im turning around 3500 or so. this seems up there. a confession: i hang out with people with hondas.. yeah i know. but they turn like 2500 in 5th. is this because my tranny was designed when the "speed limit" was around 55 and now its 70?

thanks

Adam

Re: Overdrive rpms 200 80

What's the rear end ratio in your car? If you have something like a 3.73, that may be why you're seeing higher RPM.

"it seems at freeway speed im turning around 3500 or so."

How fast is "freeway speed?"

At 80mph in 5th, my car does 3000rpm (M47, B230F, 3.31 rear end).

I believe the O/D in an M46 has a taller ratio than the 5th gear in an M47. However, the lower power output of the B21 will require higher RPM.

Re: Overdrive rpms 200 80

Freeway speed would be about 75-80. Im not sure of my rear end ratio. I wonder if it could be swapped with something out of a early model chevy or ford? or maybe throw a 5.0 rear end in there...? Its time for more speed and IPD and MVP need to lower prices. Supply and demand are great huh!!

Re: Overdrive rpms 200 81

My '81 with B23E, m46, standard size tyres and 3.73 rear end (I live in Australia) uses a tad over 2500 at 100kmh (60mph) , so just under 3000 at 110 kmh (about 70mph, i believe). From memory 3500 in overdrive on the freeway in my car would be at least 120 or so, which i think is over 80mph... Perhaps your tyres are lower profile? I am 19 and can't wait to do some mods so i can beat some ricies too!
