Oil Change interval 700 1990

Lets open up this can of worms. I'm looking to increase my oil change interval from 3,000 to 4,000 or even 5,000 miles, and not use synthetics. I have looked and looked and have never found anything that says to change your oil every 3,000 miles. So take that Mr. Mobil. Even my Volvo owners manual says every 5,000. Where did this 3,000 miles three month rule, I mean myth ever get started. Probably in Detroit.
