Fuel Problems 200 1988

I was recently going over my 1988 240 DL wagon and doing routine

maintenance. I had jacked up the front of the car about 20 inches so

I could check ball joints, etc. After letting the car down, it would

not start. I am not getting any fuel to the fuel injection rail. It

seems odd to me that a part of the fuel system would go out at that

exact moment, since the car ran fine prior to jacking. I have been

through the obvious-gas in tank, changed the fuses, no crimped fuel lines, etc. Can anyone

tell me how to check the fuel pump for proper operation? Anyone have

any other ideas on this strange turn of events? Also, I have checked

the voltage at the fuse and I get 0 volts. Is this normal when the

car is not running? Thanks in advance.

Re: Fuel Problems 200 1988

If you're sure you're getting spark i.e. pulled a spark plug wire, attatched a plug to it, grounded it, cranked and shocked yourself, then you can start searching fuel stuff. Instant-death culprits in 240s usually have to do with the fuel injection. I'd check to see if you knocked any wires loose anywhere just to be sure, as shifting the car around may have caused this.

If you hear no fuel pumps when ignition is turned to on, then check the fuel pump relay. You can pull the relay off and jumper wire the large wire terminals on the relay plug itself. If you jumped this thing properly you should hear the pumps running with the key turned to on. If they run, see if you can start the car. If so, you either can resolder the relay (see 700-900 FAQ) or buy a new one. Look in the haynes or other manual to find the location of the fuel pump relay for your year. I'd also try disconnecting the AMM and seeing if the car will run like that. If so, the connector at the AMM could be bad, or a wire could be off. Good luck.

Did you check the 25 amp....... 200 1988

fuse and its connectors? That rascal is sneaky. The fuse can look just fine, and be in Not-Blown condition, but the innards of that white plastic holder (lowest bidder to Volvo no doubt) can be so corroded and heated that contact is iffy at best.

I found a replacement fuse holder, waterproof and with 10 gauge leads, at Radio Shack for $2.99.

Good Luck,

Bob
