Overheating 200 1981

Hi everyone,

I was hoping somebody could help shed some light on an overheating problem that I'm experiencing. I recently purchased an '81 Bertone V8 conversion and it runs very hot - right up to the red line. There's plenty of coolant and upper radiator hose it hot, so I assume that the thermostat is open. I've read the archives and realize that there are number of things I need to check/do (clean radiator, etc.), but there are a few peculiar things that I don't know how to interpret. First, although the engine and upper hose are very hot, I can't get any heat at all from the vents. Second, the enginge often cools down noticeably when I run the air-conditioner. This seems counter-intuitive to me - I thought running the AC would make the engine heat up.

I'm wondering 1) if anyone can make sense of the lack of interior heat and 2) why running the AC cools the engine, and 2) should I expect a V8 to runner hotter in general given that the Volvo cooling system is designed for smaller enginges.

Thanks in advance.

    Hi..Mark

Are your cooling fan a Visco Fan ? If it is right check if its engaged at hot temp.

If your car use an aux fan, maybe the fan run on with the AC on, so when you use AC there might be a noticeably cools down.

    Regards

I'm not exactly sure what type of fan it is but you are right in that it is not running even though the engine is really hot. It does come on when I turn on the the air conditioner. I guess I need to look into a new fan or fan cluth?

    Re: Overheating 200 1981

    I know nothing about this....

But I do know many people do a conversion early Jaguar engien to american motor most of them have the over heat problem... not enought air....fan is to cool down the big V8 motor.....

Now back in the 1975 remember the Pantera ??? big V8 motor very fast car but they over heat .... the company do many thing but can not solve the problem.... then by accident they move the cooling fan back away from the radiator by 1 inch I think... the car over heat problem is solve...

so the problem was the cooling fan are seating to close to the radiator...

You may want to tried this.... oftend in convertion many people us a bigger radiator holding more cooland .......

how about tried to add a extra oil cooler.... this will help the motor runing cool...

I love the Berton they are the best looking volvo on the road...

My english are poor but I hope this will help....

Or just get on the web search engien and type over head may be something may show up///
