Gas smell in trunk/high tank pressure. 700 1990

I have a 1990 740 GL that has a strong gas order in the trunk.

Also, there is high positive pressure released whenever the gas cap is being removed.

Now, the interesting part....this car was in an accident and the tank neck was bent, not cracked but just creased.

There is a tube located near the trunk sidewall that appears to be in good condition, however, there is a smaller hole that somebody tried to cover with some cheap calking.

I resealed using a screw and industrial epoxy, problem solved...no.

I can't help but think that smaller hole is supposed to be used for ventilation of pressure, perhaps into the intake manifold??

Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Gas smell in trunk/high tank pressure. 700 1990

Just a followup to my original message. I found the third line that I suspected should connect to the fill neck. Its a small green metal tube that follows the main pipe to the tank, I did not pull the carpet very far. I assuming that it goes to the tank. If this was disconnected found I have high positive tank pressure??

Re: Gas smell in trunk/high tank pressure. 700 1990

In a recent experience of mine, the rubber seal surrounding the fill neck and rear quarter panel had come loose. The seal popped out of the quarter panel and was allowing some fumes into the trunk ... and eventually into the cabin where I could smell it. This is the black rubber seal you see when you open the fuel door. Just make sure yours is in its proper place.

I'll have to look and see the other line you are describing. I am aware of an overflow drain that dumps near the rear tire when gas backs up during fill-ups. The small drain hole is located just inside the fuel door directly under the fill neck. But this drain line will not affect tank pressure.

The rubber seal was not installed properly, thanks.

I also plugged the small drain hole in the seal because it had no connection, any gas spillage during refueling would just drip into trunk.

For now, I will keep the gas cap loose thus relieving any pressure in the tank.

Probably not the best for the environment, but I didn't think such tank pressure is a good thing.
