fuel pump relay 200 83

Hi All,

I want to re-solder my fuel pump relay as a preventative measure (which I've seen suggested on brickboard) ....I have an 83 240 wagon.

WHere is it located/ Hw do I get to it?

Thanks!!

Re: fuel pump relay 200 83

Hi Susan -

Can you get to a junkyard and get some relays there? The 1983/4 relays are the same for Fuel and main relay, and are of a similar type used for all sorts of other stuff. Get some practice, and maybe a good spare or 2.

If you can do that, you should clip off connector the relay goes into with some 6 inches of wire. Those connectors have a way of heating up and warping. Usually it's the plastic part, the little metal wire tips can be removed, and you can keep the color-coding that same. Look for more relays in the 1983-on 240's in the area below the center-dash air vents.

Good Luck,

Bob

Re: fuel pump relay 200 83

First, to answer your question, your fuel pump relay is located on the inside firewall, passenger side, just above the kickpad. A tall passenger's feet might kick it. It's a small metal-cased relay -- in fact, you'll see two identical relays. One's for the pump, the other's for the FI system.

Second, on the '83 and '84 240s this style relay doesn't fail as the other style does. Moreover, the metal-cased relay can't be (non destructively) disassembled, as the plastic relays can. And if you did, you'd find nothing inside to solder or resolder.

I wonder why Volvo switched sides on the fuel pump relay? On the 82 model its located on the driverside.

Re: fuel pump relay 200 83

The relays that were on the left side (near the driver's left knee or the hood cable) were, I think, for the K-jet system. The relays on the right side seem to correlate with a fuel injection ecu on the right side.

"...On the 82 model its located on the driverside..."

I wonder if those rare LH 1.0 '82s had the relays on the right side as did the newer 240s...

Must be an Engineering Thing ---

Now that Ford is in the game you can locate a problem with a component when it catches fire. (Or rolls over -- "I Roll" takes on a whole new meaning)
