How to install front fenders? 700 1986

I am about to replace a rusty front fender with a non-rusty used one I just got from Voluparts (for $100, and $13 shipping, I might add). What are the tricks and pitfalls of this installation? What sealants do I use, either between the fender and the engine compartment/body or the fender and the wheel well? Would it be a good idea to paint the inside of the fender with POR-15 before installing it, as insurance against future rust? The fender is the same color as my car, but if it doesn't match perfectly, and I want it repainted, is it easier on or off the car?

Thanks for your help, as always!

Re: How to install front fenders? 700 1986

I just partially removed my front left fender a few days ago to get behind a little dent in the fender.

It was fairly straight forward. Remove the bolts underhood, there are a couple more between the door and fender that are tricky to get to. I used a "wobble extension" on socket set. You might have to remove bolt on cowling (part with windshield wipers). There was something holding down in inner fender area that I did not get to.. didn't need to to get to dent.

Also it might be a good idea to remove parking lamp. If I'm not mistaken there was a bolt in that area also.

It looked like there was some type of sealant between fender and body. It may have just been a drop of silicone sealant to cushion at bolt holes.

Also in regards to sealing back of fender... it sure couldn't hurt!

You could probably use any of the rust resistant primers, Rustoleum, etc.

    Good luck.
