How many P/S rack suppliers did Volvo use?!?! 700 1987

My '87 740 has been sitting at some Mickey Mouse inspection station because the mechanic won't pass it without a new tie-rod. They picked one up at the local Volvo dealer and called me a few hours later saying it didn't fit. Of course I figured they obtained a CAM tie rod when they needed a ZF or vice versa. I went to the garage, looked at my car up on the rack, and saw what I thought was a CAM-style steering rack. I was immediately nervous because I figured the dealer would have asked the right questions to provide the correct tie rod. Anyway, to make a crappy story shorter, I ordered the CAM and ZF tie rods from alloemvolvoparts and found they both were incorrect (wrong threads on the rack side of the rod). I had to cough up almost $140 for a third, mystery tie rod from the dealer (Volvo p/n 9140504, made in the UK). It looks like the CAM style but with smaller threads. I bought this car used with 80K on the odometer. I don't have any reason to think that the rack is anything but original. Who the heck makes this third rack? Whew, I feel a little better already...

Re: How many P/S rack suppliers did Volvo use?!?! 700 1987

There is 3 of them.......when i went to get my steering rack rebuilt, i was lucky my 88 Non turbo had a CAM rack, that's the only one the guy had "already" rebuilt. There's "2" types of "one" rack, i think it's the CAM rack that there's 2 of. I don't think it's a different rack, just a "revised" one, i.e. it's got different sized parts, etc, i think the internals are slightly more complex than a "normal" cam rack.....They look REAL similar......bolt holes, etc, from memory are almost EXACTLY the same..... Volvo doesn't actually ADMIT that there's "3" types of rack, only 2, (well, here in australia anyway!), just 2 variants of one of them... Hope this helps.....

There were two sources for steering racks, Cam and ZF. All GL and GLE models have ZF steering gear, and all Turbo models have Cam steering gear.

Jason

Goto www.volvoworld.com

Here in the vehicle id section you will find the details of your cars id plates and the codes for steering type.

There appears to be a third possible make of rack TRW.

Hope this helps.

Colin

Only two I know of. Cam Gear and ZF. It is possible there is a variant of either one.
