Intermittent no start problem (long) 900 92

For about the past 1.5 yrs my '92 940 goes crazy and will not start. It cranks good, but will not start. Usually if I start checking electrical connections it will finally start. About two weeks I shut it off and it would not start. I pulled a plug to check for spark and it fired right up. Then, about 1.5 wks ago it finally decided it would not fire. I had it towed to my Volvo mechanic.

Well, he got into it, and it would not start. He pulled the wires to the engine speed sensor, plugged in a new one, and the engine fired. He then reconnected the old speed sensor, and it still fired.

What the heck is wrong with this thing?

It's only got 94k miles.

Thanks in advance.

I guess I should have said the problem seems to occur only when the engine is completely cold. Generally, once it starts, all is well. The car usually sits for a week at a time, and is driven only on Sundays, except when we go on a trip.

Sounds like an electrical connector problem, although don't rule out the FI relay or the radio suppression relay. Take a look at the FAQ for information about Unexplained Driveability Problems: Oxidized Connectors in the Performance section, where there is an explanation as to how to clean and protect engine compartment connectors.

    Classic symptoms of three problems:

    -failed rpm sensor

-fuel injection relay has solder cracks

    -failed radio suppression relay.

Any one of these will cause hot-restart problems that generally go away when the car cools a little.
