Nice day for a walk! (timing belt) 700 87

I was just checking a few things on my recently (600 miles) reinstalled head, timing belt, etc. and took off the top section of the timing belt cover. Sure enough, my new timing belt has walked about a 1/4" off of the cam sprocket and is rubbing against the belt cover. I also removed the crank pulley after seeing this and the thin metal flange shows that the belt is also riding against this. I did install a new tensioner with the belt. Any ideas? Is it possible I just installed the belt on crooked and it stayed that way? Thanks for any suggestions.

Dan

Since you had the head off, I'm thinking you left off the spacer washer under the camshaft sprocket when you put it together. It's easy to do (ask me how I know this) and will allow the sprocket too close to the head and the timing belt will walk forward. Although when I did it it didn't walk off so far it rubbed against the plastic cover.

The belt will ride out with a loose tensioner...the tensioner only squares up with the nut tightened, so it could also be a cocked tensioner.

Replace the tensioner at 150K or even every second timing belt change. Cheap insurance.

      Hi JohnB,

I'm 99.99% certain that the spacer was put back in but I will check when i re-replace the belt. The tensioner is brand new...thanks for the reminder.

The small metal flange behind the crank sprocket is supposed to look convex with the edges back. If it is installed incorrectly, the timing belt will be shredded. Check the 700/900 FAQ via the 'features' pull down menu.

Hi, thanks for the reply. Yeah, I figured the edges of that thin metal flange had to be aimed out toward the crank pulley instead of in towards the belt...that would shred the belt for sure.

It's more likely that the tensioner isn't seated quite right. The peg that slides into the head has a habit of binding up a little bit when you insert it. You can still torque down the tensioner itself, but what ends up happening is that the tensioner is slightly crooked or askew, and sends the belt to the outside of the pulleys. Not that it's common, but I've seen it happen (read: I've HAD it happen).

I would pull the tensioner out again, grease the little hinge peg on it, and put it back in against the head. Retorque the tensioner bolt too. If that's not right, you can end up with just the same situation.

      Hi Chris,

I bet this is exactly what happened. When I took the belt off to remove the head I slid rags down both sides of the belt to keep the belt engaged on the crank and keep everything out of there as suggested by Don. When putting the belt back on I sort of muscled it a bit and probably did as you suggest with the tensioner. Oh well, can always use more t belt practice...and luckily they're cheap too!
