Re: is my turbo dying? 740-760 1986

Yes, it's a 765T. I assume you have the same B230FT engine. I didn't have any starting problems or anything of that nature but the car felt sluggish from a stand still when you floor the acc-pedal. I did notice that the needle on the boost gauge did not reach the normal boost level. It normally goes half way down the yellow portion. At that time it only reached 1/4 of the way up and it seemed like forever to get there. I replaced my turbo @ 95K. My original turbo was not water cooled. I say yours isn't either. I replaced my turbo with a water cooled turbo and since have put about 25k miles. Works fine. The only symptom I did not have was the black smoke. Sometimes a defective(plugged) fuel pressure regulator will cause the car to run extremely rich and cause the black smoke. I would check the fuel pressure reg before contemplating on replacing the turbo. This is a common problem on B230FT engine.

The Air Mass meter may be another possibility. I've seen the computer fail stupid on the "rich" setting when it starts getting conflicting data from a failing Air Mass meter. I had a meter that failed intermittantly at first, making the engine cut out, then run rich, cut out, run great....etc.
