Gutting my interior..... 200 1985

I just finished "resounddeadening" my 85 245T. The Volvo foam was el shotto, stinking, rotten,etc. The Volvo rubber stuff, which is dense and pretty good was cracked and shot also. SO;

I tore everything out, seats, carpet, consoles etc.

It's amazing what I found under the carpet:

1) $5 bill

2) 1 french fry, tasted like Mac Dee's

3) Unused condom, honest it wasn't sex.

4) $1.57 in change.

5) Quite the assortment of screws.

6) RUST!!!!!!

I was ready for the rust, with POR-15 silver and black. That stuff is great. Follow the directions. Metal ready, one coat of silver and two of black on the rusty spots. Most other areas got two coats of black just for grins. That sucker is bullet proof now!! Miracle product.

Anyway I used two layers of the Jacque Whipme aluminized sound deadening padding stuff, followed by thick flat rubber floor mats on top of that all covered with the freshly shampooed carpet. Really got the carpet clean when out of the car. The flat floor mats where an inexpensive sound deadening layer....that I just thought of. They are available at any auto parts joint.

I treated the leather seats as well.

Bottom line: The car smells great inside AND it's a LOT quieter.

Paul --

Great success story, particulalry the $5 bill and other unused items. That must have made it all worthwhile.

In your opinion, how much improvement would you get by ONLY soundproofing under the under the carpets?

The "thick rubber floor mats available at any parts store".... are these the ones you normally put your feet on, or are they intended for under-carpet use?

Did you also do inside the doors?

Do you have an opinion about soundproofing above the headliner?

When you say you did behind the consoles, could explain that a bit more?

If the foam is shot and the Volvo "rubber" attached to the foam is shot, you will get a big decrease in sound.

The rubber mats are normally for your feet. I picked the flatest thickest ones I could find. Without ridges etc. Just plain thick heavy dense rubber would work, but this was easy (no cutting), not stuck with 20 yards, and cheap. You can't tell that they are there feel or looks wise but they deaden the sound as an "interlayer".

Nothing in the doors, yet.

I resealed the kick panels, and put some insulation on the hump between shifter and the parking brake (Volvo didn't have any there). I also put some under the seats.

Didn't mess with the headliner. Looks scary. Prob. would help.

Hey Paul S.,

What the heck is: "the Jacque Whipme aluminized sound deadening padding

stuff..." I'd love to find some..and maybe put some on the car even. Oh yeah, maybe in the 240 roll-back sun-ruf that roars.

Re: Gutting my interior..... 200 1985

Oh sorry for the silly name. JC Whitney is the place.

Jacque Whipme sells "Quality Heat Shield Sound Deadener". $21.95 for a 48 x 72" roll. Two layers of aluminum with a fiberglass mesh with 3/8" fiber tech padding.....resilent, mold and mildew proof."

The stuff seems pretty good (I used it on the 262C). The padding looks like chewed up clothes of every verity. Easy to cut. You will need two rolls if you want to do a killer job, but one will be enough to double the fronts, and single the rear foot wells. If you get two rolls you'll have left overs.

Never been to the "Jacque Whipme" site because I'm buried with their catalogs. They have cheap stuff, well...er....cheap, but for example once you buy something from them they send you "customer reward" catalogs. I bought the exact same tools (spring compressor (a good set) and a lever action ball joint/tie rod remover for 1/3 of what the local tool joint sells 'em for). Yes a lot of there "miracle" products are crap, but some of the stuff is cool.
