brake drum removal ALL 1966

any tricks or advice out there for removing the rear drums from my '66, P1800? I put a wheel puller on the lug nuts, screwed, banged and whatever! Yes,...the e-brake is off. Are the studs attached to the drum?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

Beside the EXCELLENT advice you've gotten so far, this is gonna sound dumb. However...

Make sure that the brake adjustment is fully backed off, or you'll be fighting the brake shoes along with the drums.

When you're doing the brakes, you might want to remove these adjusters and give them a shot of penetrant to cut the corrosion, then maybe a trace of wheel bearing grease on the adjuster threads and the flanks of the "nose cone thingie".

Best of luck.

Studs are attatched to the drum. You also released the brake shoes? I.e., backed off the brake adjusters? Other than that, these can be a real challenge to get off. Have mounted the drum puller, tightened, and hammered on the tightener. When they do relase it can be a real 'bang'.

Good Luck and take a break every so often.

You'll need a heavy duty hub puller too, not a dinky bolt one. The kind made to be hit with a hammer on both the spinner and the shaft. Get a nice heavy hammer and get the puller as tight as possible, and give it plenty of whacks on the end of the shaft. A good tip is to reverse the big nut and screw it on flush with the end of the axle shaft to help prevent mushrooming. If it just won't come off, just leave it as tight as you can get it for a while - sometimes they just need to sit under tension for an hour or so to pop off.
