starting problem 700 88

I am having an intermitten starting problem: I turn the key and nothing happens. That is, the starter motor does not turn. all the power comes on, but no starter. If I wait a bit (15-20 minutes, usually, sometimes longer) it has always started. I messed around with the battery terminals, thinking it was loose connection there. But I dont think so. It seems like other cars I have had where the problem was in a starter relay switch. Are these a problem occasionally in volvos? My car has 140000 miles on it, I have had it for about 6ooo. I cant find the starter relay switch on this car. Seem like the problem occurs after long drives, following brief stops, and on very hot days. could be just coincidental, though. it might be just happening randomly.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Re: starting problem 700 88

There is no starter relay but there is the ignition switch. Some possible causes would be bad battery (not likely from your decription), bad starter, bad wires from battery to starter and battery to ground. This problem is easily diagnosed with a meter or test light. The start point would be to check for voltage at the large and small terminals on the starter while trying to crank.

BTW: If problem is heat related then ignition switch probably is not the cause. Have a lok at the 700/900 FAQ section.

Re: starting problem 700 88

HI Gerry; I would check for a loose wire connection at the distributor. good luck , Dan.

Re: starting problem 700 88

Gerry, I would check the Park / neutral switch, with the brakes on turn key to start position and slowly move gear lever from Park to 1 to see if starter turns.
