Bulb failure relay location 900 1992

Does anyone know where the bulb failure relay is located in a '92 960? Near as I can tell, it's not on the relay board (unless it is no longer a cylindrical white relay like it's been for the past umpteen years) and I've done a good deal of searching under the dash and can't find it.

Thanks,

Lance

Re: Bulb failure relay location 900 1992

Best advice I can give you is to get a copy of the Volvo, "green book"/Factory, wiring diagram for your car. See the link to the indexes in the 700/900 FAQs.

The WD for my '96 960 shows 2 sensors either of which can light the dash warning lamp.

One is in the front, up under the dash behind the headlight switch. It, the book, shows a picture of the relay with text on the side, "Volvo" on one line and "Light Control Relay" on a second line. It is a bulb sensor and also the headlight relay.

The second one is in the back on the left side, trunk of sedan or storage compartment of a wagon. It is a rectangular metal box with a 14 pin connector on one edge.

Don't know for sure, but all the ones I'm familiar with (240 and 740) are RED and cylidrical- got one of those on the relay board?

Re: Bulb failure relay location 900 1992

Hmmm... the Bulb Failure Relays in both my 260 and 760 were white. But, no, there aren't ANY cylindrical relays on the relay board. It's got to be mounted somewhere else...

Re: Bulb failure relay location 900 1992

I double checked my memory and our 91 745 Turbo has the round, red, bulb out relay mounted on the back left side of the relay tray. Sorry that doesn't help you though.

The later 240's had them mounted under the dash just above the driver's knees (again, from memory).

Follow the wires to find the bulb failure relay location 900 1992

Lance -

From my 1986 240, I just finished checking the possibility of doing a trailer hitch connector without having the BF yellow light on. Some of the wires from the headlight switch and the brake light switch (on a 240 that one's down by the pedal pivot) will go to the BFS Relay.

Good Luck,

Bob

Re: Follow the wires to find the bulb failure relay location 900 1992

I tried that already and, unfortunately, couldn't determine anything. The 960 has more wires under the dash than the space shuttle and Mir Station combined, and most of them are taped together in a loom, so I couldn't trace any of them very far. There's a black, rectangular, box mounted next to the stereo amplifier marked "Hella" that has about 12 wires connected to the bottom of it, and one of the wires is the same color as the brake light switch. Anyone know what this is? I'm leery of disconnecting it or probing with my ohm meter without knowing what it is (I can't afford to replace any more expensive "black boxes") after my TCM went south.

Thanks,

Lance

Re: Follow the wires to find the bulb failure relay location 900 1992

Lance -

That wire color-coded like the one at the brake light switch is a good clue. Hella is a French (I think) electical parts maker, well-respected. Another clue might be to see what color code is on the wires that light the brake lights. If the Hella relay is the BFS relay, there should be the one in from the brake light switch, and then two different wires out to the brake lights themselves.

OR - do a "Jim Rockford" (old TV series) and call a Volvo dealer parts counter with a story that will get you the answer you want. I have used the story of having a daughter in another city at college who has a problem for which a shop in the college town has given her some doubtful information. e.g.: "A guy in her class told her that a black thing marked Hella with a large number of wires to it is the problem and he can fix it for only $400, is that a reasonable thing??"

If possible, choose a dealer you won't be using.

Good Luck,

Bob
