Intrument Cluster Illumination/Tach 200 89

Over the weekend I installed a new tach to replace the clock on the left side of the cluster. It went fairly smoothly and the tach works great. The only problem is that it is not illuminated. Before I tear apart the dash again, does anyone know if their is a bulb to replace here. The clock was well illuminated. The other guages are lighting up fine.

Another question- Their appears to be an upshift orange arrow on the bottom bar of indicators with a bulb behind it. My sister-in-law's '87 245 illuminates at certain RPM's. Can this be activated on an '89? Is there a wire to jump from?

Thanks!

Re: Intrument Cluster Illumination/Tach 200 89

Chances are that the left of the two bulbs that light the instrument cluster has burned out. I have found that with bulbs that old - over ten years - they are marginal at best and a little bump or jar does them in. I have had to replace those two and many of the lower warning lights. It's a PITA and the dealer price for the bulbs is outrageous. Now I keep a stock of the several types. Just did the indicator in the fog light switch - had the bulb, took 15 min.

Good Luck,

Bob

Greg, “My sister-in-law's '87 245 illuminates at certain RPM's.” That sounds like she has a manual tranny, that is telling you to shift to a higher gear.

Yes hers is manual as well as mine. How can I activate the bulb so that it illuminates at certain RPM's? Both trannys are not automatics-they are 5spd shifters. Thanks!

Re: Intrument Cluster Illumination/Tach 200 89

G.A., likely you already fixed it, but I had the same problem on my 88 240. Only one light worked but at least I had light, and after swapping the tach in none did (well, there are only 2 big dash lights). Turned out both were burned out...maybe from handling? As for the upshift-for-best-mileage indicator, read the original owners manual which explains how to program it. No manual? Call Volvo Publications and they'll sell you one for about $12 + S&H.

Greg, I don’t know which sensor or switch that activate that light, but you could check that the bulb is still good. I am sure some one will have the answer for you.

Re: Intrument Cluster Illumination/Tach 200 89

Your instrument cluster is illuminated by two bulbs that are located at the top of the assembly. They have a red/brown color base and are removed by turning them 90 degrees and pulling. They get their power from the circuit board of the cluster. The one above the clock (tach) is fairly easy to get to with the cluster in place. Perhaps just repositioning it will give it good contact and it will operate again otherwise it appears to be a dealer item.

"...appears to be an upshift orange arrow..."

The OD indicator light for an automatic tranny is an orange arrow (pointing up) at the very right end of the idiot lights. Light on means OD disabled, light off means OD enabled.
