REAR END INTERCHANGABILITY? 200 79

I've just been offered a 1987 Volvo 240 in mint condition aside from "A gear in the rear end being bad". I have here a 1980 245 and a 1982 242Ti, willn either of these fit in a 1987? If not the whole rear end, would the gears fit?

Thanks

Richard

It would be easier to just swap in a low mileage rear end. are either of those 240s you have parts cars?

to answer your main question, the rear end will swap in. u will probably want to check both axle ratios. automatic and manual transmission equipped cars had different axle ratios.

Axles from 740s will swap in too, the non-nivomat (self leveling suspension) type will.

hope this helps

take care

Re: REAR END INTERCHANGABILITY? 200 79

Hi Luke

The 1980 245 is a parts car, The 1982, 242Ti is up for grabs.$450.oo W/O the turbo rims, it's got steel wheels and caps on it now. Sadly I'm in upstate NY in a TINY town where foreign cars are frowned on and most buyers don't care to travel to to pick up a car. If by chance you are interested, let me know.

Thanks for the advice on the rear end. I'm glad now that the salvage guy wasn't able to pick up the wagon. I may start removing the axle in hops of snatching up the 87 I was offered. The title for the 87 is lost so I'll have time to get it togeather.

Thanks

Richard

Re: REAR END INTERCHANGABILITY? 200 79

Richard -

A bad bearing in the rear end? Mostly the ones that go bad are either of the axle bearings or the pinion bearing. If the latter, the car will have a sound remeniscent of an electric streetcar starting up. The sound varies with road speed, and is loud. Look in Haynes or Bentley, I have seen the procedure for replacement.

The axle bearings make noise under load and not in coast. They are an easy fix, but a press is required. Or, swap in a half shaft with a better bearing.

Good Luck,

Bob
