clutch pedal pressure 200 1980

The clutch pedal in my 1980 242 is very, very stiff. The clutch is fine, it's just that a lot of leg is required to depress the pedal. Is there any way to fix this? Could you somehow stretch out one or both of the two return springs (on the pedal and/or the lever on the clutch) or is stiffness coming from the digaphram spring inside? Another idea I had was to get the hydraulic equipment from a later model. Is there any reason why this would not be a good idea?

Anyone have any ideas?

Re: clutch pedal pressure 200 1980

Can't guarantee this will fix your problem but -

When I've replaced my clutch cable (2 times in the last 8 years), each time I got back in the car, I nearly pushed the clutch pedal through the floor - the reduction in pedal friction was that dramatic. I never really noticed the cable friction building up over the years, but it really did. A clutch cable is cheap and relatively easy to replace - you might want to try it first.

Chris -

The resistance springs are the diaphragm springs. You may have something binding in the cable or the pivot under the dash. Haynes has a pretty good layout for checking. If your cable is 50000 miles or more, and new one wouldn't hurt.

Good Luck,

Bob
