I am having a problem with a shudder when taking off in my 81 240 automatic. The owner I bought it off of (a friend and volvo mechanic) said he replaced the U joints recently. The center support bearing feels loose when I shake the drive shaft in comparison with my 84 240 that had the bearing replaced recently. At any rate, I'd like to replace the damn thing so it doesn't wear out the ujoints. What's the procedure to replace it. I have access to many tools.

Replace Rubber Support and Bearing (2 separate pieces)

Take out the complete shaft and split the two halfs.

(Mark relative position of drive shaft pieces with paint stipe)

Bearing puller needed for the bearing.(Sometimes tight!)

Slip the new bearing in the front shaft and slide support on bearing.

(Needs lubrication like soap or sillicone).

Put the stuff back together(watch the marks you make before)

Don't forget spring and washer in support hole.

Volvo makes a stiff support for "small" shaft Part # 686668, 1221635 for large

driveshaft. (Odds are you have the "small" driveshaft)

Apart from crawling on the floor, I consider this and "easy" job.
