Thanks for the reply on my freezing problem, but where is the freeze plug located on an 85 240, and should i try to start the car now that is filled with fluid.

If you need to replace a freeze plug you may want to consider installing a block heater as an alternative. I have block heaters in two of the three bricks listed below. They work swell here in the northeast. Your Volvo dealer should have the part and it fits right in where that freeze plug goes. Good luck.

Start it up. Let it come to temperature. Look for puddles.

Examine your engine block, about 2" down from the head gasket. You'll see four plugs on each side. The plugs are about 1.25" diameter and cup shaped. A core plug is just above 'n in front of the oil filter -- but there's one on each side of each cylinder.

Technically, these are "core plugs" and are the place the sand is removed after the block is cast. A sand mold defines the water jacket, and once the cast iron cools, the sand is drained from the channels and water jacket through these holes.

But a wonderful benefit of these plugs is that expanding ice will push a plug out much more easily than cracking the cast iron block. So these have become known as "freeze plugs" -- and if one of yours pops out, you only need to buy a replacement at your dealer and install it (a small chore, though). If this happens, examine them all and decide if others need replacement.
