Tire Size, Type & Source of Supply 120-130 1960

I'm restoring this vehicle and need to replace the tires. If I decide to stay with the original tires, these were described as a "low pressure 550 - 15" white sidewall". I've found a source for 590 - 15 with a 2 5/8" whitewall (www.coker.com), but would like any other suggested sources, preferably in Canada. Another alternative is to go to a blackwall radial, such as a Michelin X-Stop 165R15, which improves the handling and ride tremendously. I converted my first PV-544 from bias ply to X-Stop then ZX radials in 1971 and I can still remeber that the differences were remarkable. Coker can supply both types of tires (X-Stop & bias ply), but I'd like your advice on what are the pros and cons of each type of tire.

Thanks...Cam

Re: Tire Size, Type & Source of Supply 120-130 1960

Hi Cameron,

Since I haven't gotten around to widening my stock rims yet (as you described- thanks!) I've been running Goodyears. Straight from the local dealer- they even had 'em in stock. They still make a very narrow 15" tire for VW beetles that fits well- I think it's the "Corsa", but I'll be dipped if I can remember the numbers. It's an 'unlisted' profile, which, I think, means it's an 80- series! Maybe 155? I do remember that the numbering jumped from that up to a (more modern) 195 or something like that. Single 3/4" white stripe on one side.

They roll well, quiet on the highway, decent in the wet, but don't corner for beans. I can get 4- wheel drift at 35mph in decent corners. It's great driver- training, but I'll never beat that Subaru Justy in the slalom!

But after this winter's go- round of modifications, I hope to run a much wider, lower profile tire...

Toby

6.85-15 and 165-15 are standard sizes for 122.
