No gasket on Rear Main seal??? 70 Trans reinstall! 300 1989

I've seen everything. Today, I finally have my rear main seal exposed and out. Funny, but the seal didn't too bad, but oil was all over the back of the engine (enclosed by the housing)- hmmmm.

For fun, I had purchased a rear main flange gasket and thought I would replace that too. Took off the flange and low and behold no gasket - or any permatex - nothing! Nada!

My assumption is the last guy that rebuilt the trans did a rear main seal and left off the gasket (probably didn't have one). Could that have been the source of the rear oil leak - it probalby weeped around the flange?? You see that kind of stuff all the time. Now I don't know if the mechanic wa a Volvo dealer or not! Hmmmm! But I know when guys are in a hurry - crap like that happens and the customer never knows.

Plus, I found bolts in the wrong place on the trans (wrong sizes mixed).

I am about ready to put the trans back in - my question is do you usually have the converter on the trans to shoot it in or mounted on the flywheel?

I seem to remember doing a bw55 and the converter stayed on when I separated the trans. This one did the same - but the converter slipped right off. I did mark all positions - especially the ring gear due to the speed sensor.

Also, I did chicken out on the valve body ball - the trans looks too good, so I did the front input seal, the rear bushing and seal and pan gasket and filter. It's entirely drained - so all fresh atf with go in - plus some duralube.

Until I see real evidence that these miracle lubes actually do anything other than lighten the wallet, they will not go into my car. Just my $0.02 worth.

Place the convertor onto the trans, they are installed as one unit. When the trans is bolted into place secure the flex plate to the convertor.

Re: No gasket on Rear Main seal??? 70 Trans reinstall! 700 1989

I got the trans almost in - about an 1/2 inch to go and the convertor bolts line up.

It just needs that little nudege to seat. Does the selector have to be in d or 2 - bentley says 2?? I think it's in d right now.

Hard to believe I got it in by myself with a beat up old jack. I have all day tomorrow to get the car on the road again!

When the trans is in - I have to put on the hydraulic motor mounts and the complete new Bosal exhaust - some fun!
