I have an 82 volvo 200 series diesel with charging problems.

New battery, new alternator.

battery voltage on the B+ and D+ terminal on the alternator.

Don't have any more clues. HELP.

P.P.S. I just rememered the time I changed my alternator 'cause the gage on the dash told me it wasn't charging, I couldn't find my multi-meter so I believed the gage....$80 dollars later I realized the ground wire to the gage was loose.

Sometimes you buy rebuilt or even new alternators and they don't work(it's happened to me). If you've tried all the suggestions take the alternator back to the store and have them bench test it (Napa does this for free) also alternators are not meant to recharge drained batteries, charge the battery fully before you hook up your alternator.

P.S> Once I took my alt., to the shop to be benched and it passed, when I re-installed it worked for 1/2 an hour and then failed again (inermitent short in the windings).

Do you have a small ground wire going from the little stud on the alternator housing to the block?

At one point I noticed the alternator on my '84 diesel reading at battery voltage and I read somewhere that the housing needed to be grounded (I imagine because the rubber bushings? ) anyway I put a 10 ga wire from the stud on the housing to an available bolt on the block and the output picked right up.

Since you have replaced the battery and alternator the only component left is the voltage regulator. My Chiltons manual has a procedure for checking the regulator function. I have a 1980 240 diesel with 293,000 miles and still going strong.

My 82 diesel has internal regulator which was renewed with the alternator.

By the way mine has 376,000 and is still strong also. it just won't charge the battery,

if you have an 82 volvo that still runs? consider yourself lucky. take the car to the crusher. then you will be able to take the money and go out to eat.if you insist on working on the junk, then to test for voltage stick your finger in the coil and have someone crank the car. hope this advice helps.
