91 windshield info 200 82

Hello everybody,

I have read here a few times that some folks have put the 91 and newer

windshield in their cars. I'm tired of the trim shrinking and my older

setup leaking, so I want to install the newer setup. Besides the windshield

itself and the trim, what other parts do I need for the install? I'll be

doing this myself so any tips or info that will help would be great.

Thank you,

Dave 82 242ti

Re: 91 windshield info 200 82

Besides lowering wind noise and looking neater, they're also easier to install and less likely to leak from what I read online (not just here) before I bought one. The guy who installed mine was done before I could drive the two miles to the body shop where my car was. And he removed the old one. And my front pillar had just been redone by the body shop. So far, no puddles.

I agree about avoiding Safelite. They use cheap glass and don't do a very good installation and still charge almost double what a good local company does. But the local company that did mine gave me the lowest price, with a lifetime leakage guarantee. And they came to to the car to install it.

I would be very tempted to remove the old one, clean the channel very thoroughly, and let the guy put it in for you. Then it's their problem if you have a leak or they break it during installation.

There was a silicone smell after the guy was done, and I had to leave a couple of pieces of tape on it for a while, so he did use something. But there was no sign of sealant inside or out after he was done.

Thank you Carl,

I'm probably going to do this myself. I replaced my own windshield a few

times and I've been successful most of the time. It sounds pretty straight

forward I just have to know how the trim installs. Happy rolling.

Capish.

I got a lot of that gotta-do-it-myself in my genes as well. But since I'm not as accomplished/experienced at this as you are I abdicate once in a while. It's one of the reasons I've taken to the 240 so much; there are only a few things I hire out, the rear bushings being another one.

I think it will go in so easily you'll be disappointed...&^)

The Trim is integral to the late model windshield. It installs it's self.

It's just a black rubber surround that is factory attached to the glass. All you do is lay down a bead of butl or other installer seal and press the shield into place. It couldn't be easier. No clips, no chrome, nothing.

This also works GREAT on 140's. I've ddone three of them. It will be just fine unless your fussy about loosing the chrome trim.

Good Luck

Re: 91 windshield info 200 82

3M makes the ofer-the-counter windshield urethane for your job. I believe it is canned "Windoweld" Avoid the type used for making repairs. It runs, as it is supposed to do.

You want a high volume urethane, used for setting glass, which will stand a bead of urethane on the glass.

But then, with the later model assembly, I believe the gasket completely encases the edge of the glass, then the outside slot encases the inside of the body opening.

I don't know if urethane is even used on that assembly. if it is, i don;t know how.

The Bentley manual has something on it.

Use of the old style buytl-rubber caulk is ruled out with the new style. On the old style window (with the clip-on trim), a stand-off of about 3/8" from the body and urethane is good. The buytl-rubber may be used as a "backstop" to the glue, if desired. The stand-off helps the trim go on flush with the body opening.

Thank you Zee,

I'll look up the procedure in my Bentley. A friend of mine used the urethane and it was in a caulk gun type tube. Happy rolling!

Re: 91 windshield info 200 82

Please tell me you're getting new glass, not a used one!

As much as I favor DIY work, I send out windshields for one big reason:

$135.00, installed.

Actually... the last one might have been one TWENTY five. Granted, that's shop cost. But if you can find the parts and goo alone, for that price, you'd have done well. You don't have to mess with the goop either, which is nice because it isn't good for the hands.

I use Viracon glass. Usually clear, straight, and holds up extremely well to big objects. I've got 90k on one windshield, and it's got some tiny pits here and there, but really good overall.

I aggree, plus they can get the old shield out and disposed of for that same price. I've hade the late shield put in A 79 and a 71 and 72 140. Fit them all perfectly

Re: 91 windshield info 200 82

Hello Chris,

Yes, I am going to get new glass. Although I am going to try and save

the old one. Its good but I'm tired of the trim coming off and it's not

sealed well. I replaced the windshield and all the trim 3 years ago and

now I want to upgrade to something better. In the area in NJ I'm at it's

more expensive than your labor and I haven't seen a shop yet that's installed a 240 series windshield without leaks. Thanks for the reply.

Re: 91 windshield info 200 82

I had my 81 replaced by a national chain called Safelite. They used generic glass which I noticed was thinner than the original Volvo which got broken by a large rock. Never had a leak problem in I think 5+ years. However, there is a gap at one corner. I think they used a urathane calk in addition to the rope seal.

Re: 91 windshield info 200 82

Thank you John,

If you have gaps at the corners you can slide the trim a bit back and forth

on the clips without unsnapping it from them. That usually can cover the

corner gaps. What happened to mine is that the rubber lip on the trim was

replaced when I had the car painted and the windshield removed. Now 3 years

later the rubber lip has already shrunk and caused a gap so I would like to

update for the lower wind noise and better sealing.
