HELP!!! Crazy engine reving 700 89

Lately Ive had a problem where my engine would rev up and down about 750rpm + or -. The weird thing is that it only happenes on certain occasions. Here is when it happens:

-After starting the engine after its been cold for a few hours or more.

-ONLY with in the first 10-15 mins of driving (always when I leave my house and arrive at the entrance to De Anza College, ALWAYS!!! at the same area!)

-ONLY lasts for a min or so (when Im trying to park so u could just imagine how annoying that is)

-Never happenes again during the day UNLESS the engine has been cold for a few hours

-acts normal before and after the event

So what the heck is happening? I could expect it like clockwork. Is it a compression problem? Head Gasket? Something major? Computer? I really have no idea. Its the SAME EXACT thing every day!

Re: HELP!!! Crazy engine reving 700 91

I had a similar prob except my car would also stall occasionally. also seemed more frequent on damp days. anyway, I replaced the fuel relay plugs rpm sensor and cleaned the throttle body and all the ground and power connections.....with no luck. Finally I checked the coil wire at the distributor cap and viola' the wire ends were totally corroded. apparently when it was cold and damp it only made an intermittant connection but better once it had warmed up. hope this helps

Hmmm...for some reason I didnt think of that. I musta had my mind somewhere else. That make a whole lot of sense. When I go to school, its at 8AM, when it happenes. I totally blew off the idea cuz I figured that if it only happened for a short part of the driving time, it was due to something else.

btw, off subject, but I killed an M3 today! I know racing's bad, but I couldnt resist this opportunity to make this guy want to trade in his M3 for a Volvo.

The only part of your car which can cause the idle speed to fluctuate is the Idle Contol Valve which is mounted under the intake manifold. It may be sticking open. You should remove it and clean it with solvent. There should be information in the 700/900 FAQ.
