Overdrive Relay 700 1987

I am having problems with an overdrive relay. I replaced my transmission and with it came the addition of the overdrive relay which worked fine for quite awhile but now it isn't. I replaced it once with a used one which worked good for even shorter but now is failing.

Situation is as follows: drives fine down road then kicks out of overdrive. I have the relay sitting out to fix problem by either moving plug around in it or what usually works best is tapping the relay against something. Then and only then will it kick back into overdrive. Any suggestions - what I am wondering is if I get a new or used one will it work for awhile and then be doing the same thing? O-ya it does seem to get a little warm, is that normal or not? Maybe I have an electrical problem.

Thanks - Noel

Re: Overdrive Relay 700 1987

Why not try the zero$$$ Don Foster resolder routine? Remove the relay cover and resolder the joints on the board. A magnafying glass might reveal cracks that would point to the problem joint(s). I would suggest that you resolder the fuelpump relay as well- Don would probably suggest removing all the relays and resoldering them!!

"Don would probably suggest removing all the relays and resoldering them!!"

He would. Cheap insurance and good practice.

Re: Overdrive Relay 700 1987

Noel,

i also suggest you use the Don Foster resolder routine first.

Today i fixed (resoldered) 3 fuel pump relays for my 760 GLE.

I can use them all again.

The OD-relay is very easy to open.

mark the sides first with a felttip pen for future re-assembly

Take a small screwdriver and press it between the bottomsides where the little clips are holding down the bottompart.

You just slide of the protective cover.

All you have to do now is taking a 30 W solderinggun and let all solderingplaces become "fluid" fot a short while.

Especially the fixation of the relaymountings is important.

re-assemble and try it out.

If the OD is still not working you have two possibilities:

The relay is not soldered correctly or you have an interrupted wire connection in the wiring from the OD-switch in the shifting handle to the connector underneath the dash (fusebox).

Usely the wire-break is in the spot where the wires leave the wireprotection coming out of the shifting handle.

You have to dismantle the lowerdash part to reach this location.

See the FAQ-part for further details
