Removing A Seized Spark Plug 140-160 72

This car is rusty in all the wrong places. Nothing turns without a fight. Now it's the #2 spark plug. Maybe it's cross threaded. All I know, it's not coming out without force, penetrant, heat or a hammer. Before I make a mess of something simple: Any Help? Thanks - Tim

Make sure you use a good penetrant, like PB Blaster.

This has worked for me, I've used it a couple of times, I think I heard about it from one of Don Foster's posts a few years ago. I guess it won't help if it's cross threaded. Dunno.

Just tighten it and the loosen it with as much force as you dare to. It will not move at all at first, but with a bunch of repetition, you will start to hear it come loose. This is an example of what happened when I tried it the first time:

I went back and forth about 10 times with nothing happening. I went counter-clock, and heard a "tick". Then I went clockwise, and hear "tick". I went CCW and got "tick, tick". CW, "tick, tick". Then I got 3,4,5,6 "ticks" and then it broke loose.

It takes some patience, but those creaks or ticks are really rewarding to hear! Just be careful not to break off the plug.

Good luck, hope this helps you out!

Greg

If it runs, let it get up to temperature. Then try removing the plug.

I've used Never-Sieze on the plugs for years and it's always worked great.

Success. A little penetrant, a lot of force. I couldn't do much in the way of heating that cylinder - it wasn't firing. When the plug came free, it was fouled with soot beyond black. No oil fouling, that's good. I'll tune the car this week, then get an education in carb tuning (thinking that's the cause of the soot). Thanks again - Tim

Sounds like very good news.

A good cast iron head, the threads should be OK. Run a chaser through for good measure.

Maybe it's time for new cap, rotor, wires, plugs. If that cylinder wasn't firing, a buncha gas probably washed into the sump. Consider oil 'n filter...

I've always used never-sieze on the plug threads with excellent results.

"...education in carb tuning (thinking that's the cause of the soot)..."

Well, maybe..... How did the adjacent plug look? That carb should affect two cylinders about equally.

Re: Removing A Seized Spark Plug 140-160 72

All cylinders were sooty. #2 was the worst. It fired right up with a new plug. I am going to tune the car some night this week and that includes all the fluids and such. Something about the car smells gassy and it isn't me. Not like raw fule but unfired fuel. The tailpipe is a sooty mess. This is what leads me to rich running carbs. I'm guessing. The cars not registered yet so road trials are out. Soon though, very soon. Thanks again - Tim
