coolant temp sensor 200 1990

My check engine light is on and I the error says faulty temp signal. I am betting the sensor is bad 230k miles. Where is it located and how much does a new sensor cost? Side note. the car will start and die. then will restart very easily and usually stay running. I am thinking there is a realationship between the sensor and the stalling problem. what do you think?

Thanks Jon

Jon, make sure the wire to the sensor is not broken, then check continuity to the gray connector on the firewall. Look fo the yellow wire. The wire may just be broken.

Re: coolant temp sensor 200 1990

Jon:

Phillip is steering you in the right direction - let me pass on a fairly inexpensive source for the part: www.alloemvolvoparts.com - you'll need the Bosch 0 280 130 032 temp sensor which they list for $21.42. You'll also need to drain about a gallon of coolant from the engine before removing the old sensor or you'll make a mess in your driveway. The drain cock for the block is a brass barbed fitting on the passenger side behind the #4 exhaust header, 13mm box end usually gets it for me.

You most likely need to replace the sensor if the OBD codes are saying faulty temp signal, and this will probably cure your start and die problem, but it couldn't hurt to clean your throttle body and IAC motor, and adjust your TPS to "click" when the throttle is closed. When these items get gunked up or out of adjustment, you'll have lumpy idle, cold stumbling and stalling symptoms.

Good luck with it.

Re: coolant temp sensor 200 1990

sensor cost $45, starting & dieing then starting- check operation of start injector, located under intake manifold just downstream of throtlle body, also fuel pump check valve may be bad & not holding pressure.

sensor is under intake manifold @ no.3 cyl. no.19 deep well socket. sensor, o2 & amm all give signles to the ecu which intertips them combined for fuel management.
