1982 Volvo GLE (Is this thing rare?) 1982

Hello, my name is Adam and just I recently purcahsed a 1982 Volvo GLE from a family friend. The only question I have is, does anyone else have any information on this car. It isn't classified under any number catagory...all I see is 'GLE'. I've even checked the owners manual and it doesn't refer it under any number catagory. All I know is that it has a B28 engine in it (Usuaully classified as the PRV-6). The car has a few mechanical problems, such as it not starting on the first time (Ya have to hold down the gas pedal), and some trouble with the engine seeming to accelerate and stay in first gear too long. Other then that, the car is great. Leather interior, power everything, and it only have 90,000 miles on the odometer. Anyway, if you had any information on this car, if you could post something or e-mail me back it would be a great help. Thanks again.

Re: 1982 Volvo GLE (Is this thing rare?) 1982

B-28's were plauged with timing chain /cam and oil delivery problems. My mechanic reccomended giving it a good run up to speed fairly quickly about once a week to keep oil passages clear. (Don't know how true that is) Keep your eyes open for a B-23. It's a fairly easy swap, and the car will run forever. I've seen good B-23's for about $300 CDN

Regards,

Rare? I guess - only 6390 made. Desirable? Hardly - nobody likes the V-6 cars.

As far as your performance problems, start by looking for vacuum leaks.

Re: 1982 Volvo GLE (Is this thing rare?) 1982

Adam -

Your car would be numbered a 264 (if a 4-door) or a 262 if a 2-door, in the years when Volvo used logical numbers. GLE is Grand Luxe Executive, and thus has everything on it. Not many around now b/c the Peugot/Renault/Volvo (PRV) engines are not as desirable as the 4-cylinder engines.

Go to www.volvocars.com/lit and look for all the books on it you can find and order as many as you can afford. Especially get the one on Wiring Diagrams. That engine had some problems but they can be handled and/or avoided with proper maintenance.

Good Luck, and welcome to the club.

Bob

Well, I have seen one before...but the keyword here is "seen". It was silver with beige leather interior. In our state, we have different colored inspection stickers for odd and even yeared cars---this one was an odd year (I'll say either 81 or 83), but I did not get close enough to peer into it and check things out. From what I understand, the car was discontinued after 1983 when the 700-series took over. Any one else have any ideas?
