900-series bumpers 900 1995

How strong are the bumpers on 1991-98 900-series Volvos? Are they flimsy, weak, or tough?

I was rearended in my 945 by a Camry a couple of months ago. I was at a stop light, he was going approx. 25-30 mph, judging by the impact. Me - slight buckling of the frame, bumper took most of the force due to the strong shocks mounted in there, and actually popped back to it's normal position!

Camry - practically destroyed, front end completely crumpled.

I then proceeded to drive 300 + miles up to VT from NY, with nothing more than minor exhaust noise. He wasn't going anywhere for a while after that!

Moral of the story - these bumpers are tough as hell.

The early models, like other Vovlos of that vintage, have a molded black covering over a substantial aluminium struture.

The front ones have shock absorber type rods mounted on deformable XXXX shape plastic blocks - very resilient.

I thought that the rears also have some shock absorbing component...

They probably have, but I have had the rear bumper off yet :)

They are tough as hell!

I have several incidents I could cite to you first hand, but not enough time.

On the later 960's they are painted to match the body color. Thus, any scratches are going to look worse. But the structures are very very strong.
