Exhaust system shot '71 142S 140-160 1971

First the details:

I have a 1971 142S with a B20 engine using a single weber carb (DGAV32/36) with weber intake manifold.

My exhaust manifold has several cracks in it, the mufflers rattle like HELL, and I have noticed several dents and even holes in the main exhaust pipe and its associated welds. Not to mention the constant stink of exhaust coming through all the worn out grommets in the firewall. In short: time for a new exhaust system!

Whats a good way to replace my whole exhaust system? I am thinking headers from IPD (new, better flow, wont crack like a used exhaust manifold), but I dont know where to get mufflers. Flowmaster? Midas? Tin cans?

Asa

I'd just take it to an exhaust shop after replacing

the exhaust manifold. I did this at a local exhaust

place for my 164; they didn't replace things with

stock items they put in replacements but it looks

and sounds good and not loud. I just found it simpler

and quicker to do it this way.

You can get parts or the pretty much the entire system at any shop. You could call IPD and see if they have any left overs - they used to carry the entire system, (Starla ?) - you get the tail on up to the headpipe including two mufflers and rubber donuts. Swedish Classics had mufflers and most of the pipes last I checked. Any of the advertisers here can help you and I'm sure there's web listsings of them all. It's a easy system to get and deal with. I wish I had gone with a header and not the crusty exhaust manifold. Next time around I will. Getting an exhaust system for that car will soon be the least of your worries. :)

A header won´t do much at that level of performance of the engine. Go for the stock E manifold or the regular cut-off model. According to KG Trimning, a well known swedish race part dealer, a stock manifold flows almost as good as a well made 4-2-1 header. But the headersure looks cool, I even think of installing one myself....hehe.

From Volvo's Performance Tuning the B18 Series:

"For all engines of 95 H.P. or less, replace the standard exhaust manifold with the (4 into 1 header). Late models with 100H.P. or more are equipped with an effecient manifold. The difference between the stock manifold and the header is about 4 H.P. (at higher RPMs) and isn;t recommended".

I would add that the "E" stock manifolds are even better.
