Clanking noise when under heavy load and bottoming out 900 1991

My 1991 945 Turbo has started making a clanking noise when I hit a bad bump and it bottoms out. It will also do it more often if it is heavily loaded and under hard accelaration. I have looked under the car and do not see any thing loose. If I tap on the driveshaft, it makes a similiar sound to the clanking I am hearing. If I shake the driveshaft close to where they join, there is some movement. Any ideas or suggestions?

Leon:

In addition to checking items suggested in other posts, check the rear transmission mount. When the rubber in the mount gives out, the transmission will move up and down enough to contact the rear crossmember and make a noise like you described.

Good Luck.

Re: Clanking noise when under heavy load and bottoming out 900 1991

We had the same problem on our 740 sedan. I looked under there and could never find anything. Finally (and LUCKILY) I was under there one day and saw where the fuel line (high pressure supply side) had broken loose from the under side of the car and dropped down just enough that when I hit a large depression in the freeway, etc., with big passengers, the drive shaft was coming up and the rear-most u-joint was grinding away at the metal fuel line. When I discovered it, it was just about all the way through the tubing. It's probably a slim chance that this is what's going on with yours, but it may be worth a look.

The center support bearing of the drive shaft and its rubber support give this symptom. Have replace the rubber support in two turbos so far to cure it. You could try shimming the whole support upward approx 1/8 inch or so with washers and see if that helps. It is cheaper and may do the trick. There are only two bolts holding the support to a plate and would be worth a try.
