reverse lock out switch(M47) 200 87

Hey, On My wife's '87 240 , she needs to engage the reverse collar to shift smoothly into first and second.3-5 gears are fine.How to I remedy this?

Pop up the shift boot, carefully so as not to rip it. There are press-in snaps that hold it in. 2 front, 2 rear.

Then an 8mm socket adjusts the little plate on 2 bolts. That's all there is to it.

Chris, Is that what Haynes refers to as the reverse detent bracket(section 7A-4 pic. 2.25)?

That's the one. I don't have the Haynes manual available at this exact moment but there aren't any other adjustments possible on the whole shifter assembly. I'll check the manual when I get out to the garage just to be sure, though.
