Electric Cooling Fan on a 780 - Running 700 1989

My daughter called from college and said the elctric fan was running on her 780 after she turned it off. Is this normal? If not, what is the easiest way to turn it off?

Thanks.

Re: Electric Cooling Fan on a 780 - Running Thanks for all the replies 700 1989

Guys, thanks for your replies and suggestions. I should get to look at the car this weekend. If this message is still on the board, I will post what I found out.

    Leon,

Also, there the slim chance the relay is sticking "on". (Generally they fail the opposite way.) I don't know where it is on the 780, but on the 740 it is mounted to the front of the radiator overflow bottle, next door to and identical to the radio suppresion relay.

    Re: Electric Cooling Fan on a 780 - Running 700 1989

    Hi Leon:

Does it run forever, or just run for five or ten minutes after she cuts off the engine? If it runs forever I'd think of an electric short, or perhaps a bad sensor. Another thing to consider is whether there is anything going on to raise the operating temp of the vehicle. I had a similar problem with 960 earlier this year that proved to be a symptom of a bad thermostat. Replaced the thermostat, stopped the fan. Does she know if the car is running hot?

      Re: Electric Cooling Fan on a 780 - Running 700 1989

Dear Mike, nice to hear from you again. It happened after she drove just a short way. It probably would run forever but she disconnected the battery cable. The car is not running hot. I was wondering if the 2 wires going to the switch on the radiator could be unplugged and that would stop the fan so she would not have to take the battery cable off every time she turned the car off. If that switch went bad, would it make the fan stay on all the time? She is coming home Wednesday for Christmas and I will be able to look at it after Wednesday or take it to a shop.

      Thanks for responding.

      Leon

        Hi Leon:

Can't say for sure, but I think that if you did disconnect the two wires it would stop the fan. Better than having to disconnect the battery. Just so she reconnects them when she drives so she'll have some cooling.

        Mike

The electric fan runs on a temp sensor. When the temp is over what the sensor limit is, the fan will be on. So, if the temp sensor is 180 degrees and the engine bay is at 185 degrees even though the car is off, the electric fan will run.

If the two wires coming from the radiator are unplugged, will the fan cut off?

        Re: Electric Cooling Fan on a 780 - Running 700 1989

It sounds as if a possible fault is the temp. sensor in the radiator, it is shorting and causing the fan to run all the time. If you pull the wires off it the fan should stop. If you bring the wire ends together, the fan should start.

Try checking in that way first. If the fan starts and stops as expected, then the fault must lie in the temp. sensor. It is quite a cheap part from volvo parts. It just pulls out. Be ready with a rag or a cork trimmed to size, as there is some coolant above the level of the sensor.

Good luck & Merry Christmas from Europe!
