High RPM after warm, will not crank after 900 1994

94' 960 (180K mi.)cranks & runs good cold, however once warmed up (only a few minutes)the engine revs up to 2000-2500 rpm and stays there. However, the engine runs smooth. The engine can be reved up (still smooth) but idles back to 2000-2500. When it's been running at this level for a few minutes or longer and I turn the ignition off, it can't be restarted hot. The starter/engine turns but will not crank until it's cooled down completely. The check engine light is on and I don't know anything about checking codes. First time Volvo owner needs help!!

It sounds like there is an air leak somewhere. Check all those wide air hoses for cracks. How does the brake pedal feel when it is running? May have a leak in power assist diaphram. If that checks out your throttle body may wacked. Your car seems to be running lean. When its cold the engine naturally runs rich until warm up so the hole may not be very large. You do not have a check engine light?
