Inner Tie Rod questions

Hello all,
Both my 82 and 83 Volvos have worn inner tierods !!! On my 82 I needed a rack, and on the 83 they were done when I bought the car, so I've never had to deal with them. How do you R&R them ? ICPGroton advises there are male and female threaded ones, anyway to tell without removing them?? Why does this crap have to surface in the dead of winter!!!!! Anyway any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks...
Also, how long should Moog ball joints last?. Are they not that good ?, should I go with Volvo this time???
Thanks again.///

Inner Tie Rod questions

Chuck,

Inner tie rod replacment is a peice of cake. The inner end threads into/on to the rack. You can pull the inner end of the rack boot back ... get a pipe wrench on the end collar and break it loose. Then you can tell if it is indeed a male of female thread. You can then thread it back on and snug it up until the replacement arrives. I thought ... and I may be wrong ... there were only two choices on racks (and maybe rod)... a Cam or a ZF. The Cam's outter rubber boot fits to the tie rod ... the ZF has a plastic disc in the end of the outter boot and the tie rod runs through it. That's the best way to identify them.

To install the inner tie rod ... clean the threads, add a little medium strenght Loctite ... tighten it up with the pipe wrench ... then peen the end of the collar thread with a punch to lock it on. I'd get the outter tie rod ends and TRW balljoints from Groton. I've used MOOG but feel the TRW is a better piece. In fact the old ball joints I just replaced on my 83 244 Turbo ... appeared to be indentical to the TRW except they had Volvo stamped on the bottom instead of TRW. Groton's prices on these are the best I've found. Good service, prices and people at Groton's. Hope this is helpful.

Inner Tie Rod questions

Thanks t-bone......Yes it is helpful, I thought I was going to need special tools or something. So I can partially loosen the inner rod without removing the outer ??
Thanks again...
