Dash lights flicker when car runs...

Breif background... Christmas trip... 240 breaks timing belt... just drover 12 hours to pick it up... runs great, but Batt / Brake Failure / Bulb Failure / ?one I can't remember? all rapidly flash whenever the car is running... even if you are in park... seem to go blink insync with bumps in the road, but still blink even if sitting still... car runs fine... he replaced the timing belt, alt. belts, and the little piece in the dist. that tells the coil when to spark (no points in this- the later version) it has a 3 wire plug coming out of it, and the plastic was cracked, so it'd short against the side... that's all he did tho. I assume it's a loose wire somewhere... where to look?

Thanks... take care...
Aaron. :)

Aaron:

When I had this problem with my 240, the voltage regulator on the alternator was bad. Everything else was OK, so I was able to repair the problem for under $40. Check for loose wires to the alternator before spending any money, though. Especially since major work has been done to the car recently. If wiring, etc. checks out OK, then I guess the timing of the two problems is coincidental.

Best of luck.

Most of the idiot lights have a test feature you are unaware of. They have a diode in series with them which allows current to flow to the alternator, when the alternator is not charging. Notice how most of the idiot lights are on when you have the key one and the engine is not running? Since the lights are flicking, I would guess one of the diodes in the alternator is bad.
