fuel gauge inoperable 200 1985

Well, I was considering selling my brick but decided against it after running into a guy with 500K miles on his. I fixed my charging problems through the help of this board...Thanks. Now onto my issue...
According to the previous owner of my 85 Wagon when the transmission was replaced the gas gauge quit working. I do not know how reliable this info is, but Iam sure that the gas gauge never works. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to troubleshoot this? It is getting old resetting the tripometer to remind me to get gas..

thanks

shane

I had this problem in my 89 240 when I first bought it.

I thought it was the sending unit (?)
I hate to say that I do not know exactly what was wrong but my mechanic was working on something else behind my instrument cluster And replaced my gauge($25) and all was well after that...
