leaky steering rack? 200 1984

How can you tell if a steering rack needs to be replaced?

It shudders when I steer while driving. The rack has cracked boots, & seems to be oily & greasy on one of the cracked boots.

Can I replace it myself?
... what will I need?
... how much time should I alot to it?

thanks in advance & take care.

Steve's given you good advice. Definitely try the shake test. I've never had to mess with a broken rack on my cars yet, but I can tell you that on my '83 244 turbo's rack, the boots were cracked on both sides, and when I was replacing them, the left side one had definite grease in it. I'm pretty sure this is put in there on purpose to lubricate the stuff in there. Since the rack on my car is still working fine. I wouldn't worry about the grease. I say if the rack passes the shake test, replace the boots and pray to Valhalla.

Jack it up. Shake the wheels and check for play in the rack. You probably have some -- when the boots split, grit gets in and erodes the ball-and-socket joints inside.

The inner tie rods and boots can be replaced, but it's often economical to buy a reconditioned rack.

The switch is not punishing:

-- Jack her up

-- Uncouple the steering column u-joint.

-- Undo the hoses to the pump. (Be prepared for a gush o' fluid.)

-- Use another jack under the tie rod ends, just enough to take the weight and keep the studs from turning. Unbolt them.

-- Unbolt the rack itself -- four or five bolts.

Reverse to install. Count threads on the tie rods ends to approximate a correct alignment and take it to an alignment shop. I think I've remembered everything. The replacement made my 84 a pleasure to drive.
